Every year, millions of people start their own home based business venture. Here are some tips to help new home business owners get started on the right track.
Your Home Office
Having a permanent work area is a great way to get yourself into a working state of mind. Don't skimp on a proper desk, comfortable chair and organizational materials like a calendar and filing system. A comfortable work space is much more conducive to productivity than an uncomfortable one and may be the difference between a 5 and 6 figure income for your business.
Technology
It's extremely important to have the proper technology in place for your business niche. Don't skimp by using an older, slower computer. Having a computer or laptop that runs fast and has less problems means you will be able to work faster and get more done. With the low cost of computers these days, there is no excuse to be using a computer that is hindering your performance.
Scheduling
One of the most important aspects of a home business is scheduling. Consider whether your clients will be on the East Coast of the US, in Europe, Asia or wherever. Make sure to plan specific times when you will be available to your clients and contacts. If you plan on working at night, that's ok, but you must still be available during the day some time to take care of client's needs should they arise. Have set times where you will work at a steady pace and try to stick to them. Don't forget to give yourself a day off here and there, or even a long weekend. Use the benefits of being able to work when you want to your advantage.
Distractions
One of the big drawbacks to having a home based business is the amount of possible distractions you must deal with. Nothing is more frustrating than to be in the middle of an important phone call or in the middle of writing an important email and be interrupted. The dog needs to go out, someone needs to be fed, Fedex is knocking on the door, these are all common distractions that you need to deal with in a home business. Whether you need to hit save on that document or you need to put a client on hold, be ready for these distractions when you are working, have a back up plan for whatever may pop up.
There's another kind of distraction that is even more insidious. This is the lure of the Internet. Chat, forums, instant messages, even online games, these are all possible distractions that will kill your productivity. It's ok now and again to play a game or chat with a friend, especially when business is slow, but you must try to be disciplined. Set specific times when you will work and specific times to chat or play and stick to those plans. A little bit of discipline and self control will go a long way.
Automation
When you are a solo home business owner, you will have special needs. It is very difficult for one person to juggle a home business, as well as take care of the home, run errands, get groceries, take care of the kids or dogs etc. One way to make your life easier and help your productivity is to use automation and automatic scheduling. For instance, you will need to perform backups of your data at least weekly or daily. Automate this task by using a program that will backup your data at night when you are away from the computer. In addition, email sending, blog posts, anti-virus and spyware scans, reports and many other things can be automated.
