Baby Boomers, It Makes Sense for You!

By Cheryl Poussard

Starting an Internet home business has interesting potential for anyone, but from the 50's age group perspective, it's just sound financial sense.
Low investment in money and time compared to other start ups:
Internet businesses are low investment start ups and the amount of time devoted is flexible dovetailing nicely into a second business you can work and grow while you are still traditionally employed. As time goes on and your business begins to generate an income stream, it can be reinvested to ramp up earnings and allow you to work from home full time or provide an avenue to an earlier retirement and shorter work hours.
Security: A home based business can be a real security blanket.
Open a business magazine: you don't need to look far to see generational workplace articles focused on downsizing, off shoring, layoffs, forced early retirements, severance "options" (where layoff is the only other real option) and terminations that smack of age discrimination or "ageism" for those in their 50's and early 60's. Older workers are most often the target simply because of the economics: they earn more. Additionally, youth enamored America has spawned a generation that often envisions older workers as inflexible "blockers" in the way of their career aspirations rather than sources of valuable experience and knowledge. Top level CEO's appear equally wowed by the idea that new, inexperienced and inexpensive junior talent is the quick fix for what "ails" sluggish profits. The same long tenure that once made you untouchable has placed a target squarely on your back. Times have changed and these eye opening trends amount to a wake up call for the 50's. Shed your traditional idea of the "secure job until you retire." Statistics are flagging that this will not be the future for a good percentage of us.
The Urban Institute predicts that 1/3 of employees over 51 will change jobs and "downsizing" will account for 25% of those moves. Still want to think "traditional" and say "on with the job search if it happens?" In his article "50 and Fired", FORTUNE Magazine's John Helyar wrote that 3.5 million people between the ages of 40 and 58 vanished from the American workforce from 2001 to 2004, about 5% of all baby-boomers. Mark Zandi, Chief Economist of Economy.com states "Older white-collar workers quickly become disenfranchised. They have difficulty getting back into the job market, and when they do, their compensation is often significantly reduced." Seasoned workers can't be sure of a financially rewarding rebound back into traditional employment in our 50's.
A home based business started and nurtured now, while you are employed, is a home run from every perspective. If your tenure with corporate America is long and idyllic, you'll have additional income and a well-established business for some extra retirement income. If you become a statistic, your pain will be cushioned by your home based business income that can quickly grow in response to the increased time you have to spend with it. The icing on the cake: you already invested in the business when you had a steady income.
Retirement: Large numbers of boomers haven't funded their retirement adequately.
Although we meant to save more, an AARP study from the statistics of the Federal Reserve shows that the baby boomers born between 1946 and 1955 had a median household net worth of only $146,050 in 2001. The more alarming news is that these "older boomers" have outpaced their juniors (born 1955-1964) in retirement preparation. A John Hancock Financial Services Survey reveals that the average 401K participant plans retirement at close to age 65, which is up almost 3 years over 2002. Projections for a sluggish economy through 2008 and possibly longer underscore the difficulty of making up this retirement shortfall by traditional investment means. Working more years appears the chosen, although undesirable, bandaid.
Earning at home, the non-traditional route, can provide that additional retirement income and, for the most successful, has actually outpaced traditional income sources with less time expenditure.
An Internet home based business keeps you young:
Let's face it, the future is global and the internet is the connection. You don't know much about the internet except how to scan through E-Bay and get some directions from Maps.com? Don't let that stop you! The internet is literally amazing to learn and home based business opportunities are out there to lead you through it step by step. It's a great feeling to be keeping up with technology. A side benefit: You'll be surprised how at your traditional job your internet interest will play to your advantage in the eyes of colleagues and younger workers. Many older workers are in denial about changing technology; just hoping to get by till the end of their careers without having to take it on. Younger workers embrace it and dive on in. Your very knowledge of the internet could be that image enhancer at your workplace, helping you appear a flexible, change embracing employee.
An Internet business can be an expression of yourself:
Too often our traditional jobs become repetitive, stressful and lack fulfillment. The motivator is income, not interest. Internet marketing businesses are an avenue to working on something that's passionate for you (a website about your favorite hobby, for instance, highlighting related products, either that you developed or those affiliate companies let you sell for a commission). The knowledge that you have gathered over the years in your hobby is interesting and draws people to your web site through search engine technology. That knowledge is worth money. What could be more fun than making money at what you love? Imaginative people with ordinary backgrounds have done just that.
Internet business comes with a caution, as does any business startup. Do your research and be sure the company you invest in to train you is rated highly by the internet watchdogs and includes ongoing, step-by-step training and help desks staffed by real people at no additional cost. And lastly, take caution with low cost offers and promises of immediate riches for no work. So you're 50? You should know better!

Check Out This Excellent Home Based Business Opportunity

Cheryl Poussard, author of this article is an early-retired Internet business owner and former manager at Fortune 500 companies.
